The son of a cabinet-maker, Pasquale Natuzzi developed his passion for designing furniture at a young age. In 1959, at the age of 19, he opened a workshop in Taranto with three collaborators, producing sofas and armchairs for the local market. He moved to Matera in 1962, where he gained knowledge in commercial trade. After five years, he returned to his original dream of producing sofas and armchairs, however this time on an industrial scale. In 1972, he founded Natuzzi Salotti; but a year later a fire completely destroyed the Matera factory. He then decided to relocate production to Santeramo, Italy, which is the current headquarters of the Group.
As Natuzzi travelled to the USA, he noticed a market gap: for many, leather sofas were perceived to be reserved for the elite. And with that, he was determined to democratize the leather sofa, bringing its elegance and comfort to a wider group of people. Later, he established Natuzzi Upholstery Incorporated in New York. The venture became successful in the 1990s, and in the succeeding years Pasquale Natuzzi and the Natuzzi Group received several awards including his induction to the American Furniture Hall of Fame (2008), the Capital Elite prize from the Italy-China Foundation (2010), the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Anti-Defamation League (2011), and the ICT Innovation Award (2013), among others.
In the space of more than fifty years, the Natuzzi Group has been the top Italian producer of designer furniture with 7000 employees, 11 factories, 285 Natuzzi stores, and 327 Natuzzi Galleries worldwide. Today, Pasquale Natuzzi continues to pursue his dream of bringing beauty to every home.
Beauty makes us happy, especially when it surrounds us in the place where we feel most protected, relaxed, and free—in our own home.
